WHAT IS THIS THING?

What is this thing?

This massive thing is growing on the hill that is our backyard. I don’t know what it is. Whatever it is, I’m not eating it.

  1. if those little lobes look like sponges underneath, it is probably sulphur shelf or chicken mushroom. there used to be one that came up every year on old reston avenue at the roots of an ancient tree… I ate pieces of it, fried in butter. They pulled up the tree and the mushroom went away. to be sure it’s sulphur shelf pick up one of the lobes and make sure it is sponge-y underneath. if it has parallel flanges (similar to common field mushrooms) stay away.

Hi Kelly, I looked underneath the lobes and they are very smooth. They must be edible because it looks like someone took a nibble last night. It wasn’t me though. Thanks for the info.–Colleen
